An employee of the Australian tote betting company, Tabcorp, working in the corporate offices in the claims department was able to mastermind a $650,000 scam.
Working in the main offices, he had access to the details of uncollected winning bets that punters had failed to cash-in. The unnamed employee, 35, then passed on copies of the betting receipts for his wife, 34, to collect at various betting agency outlets.
Punters are able to collect their winnings from any NSW TAB outlet or through the claims department where the employee worked.
It is alleged the pair first started the scam back in 2013, and cashed in 31 separate high value winning tickets to amass a total of $650,000 over a three year period until the arrest of the Tab workers wife on the 17th July, as she attempted to cash-in another ticket.
Following an extensive investigation, a 34-year-old woman was arrested leaving a betting agency at Wentworthville on Sunday, July 17 2016.
Following her arrest, her husband was also arrested at work, at the Tabcorp office in Granville. Police later searched their home at Constitution Hill, western Sydney were they discovered more betting receipts along with a quantity of cannabis and the drug ice.
Both have been bailed and await trial on the 17th August. They are to be charged with 31 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.
