Trainer Charles Byrnes and jockey Davy Russell teamed up to get one over the bookies with an old fashioned betting coup that ruffled the feathers of the racings governing bodies.
The coup took place at Roscommon on the 2nd of August with War Anthem, Mr Smith and Top Of The Town, all trained by Byrne all winning to land a treble at odds of 4,334-1 at early morning prices. The bookies insisted the gamble had cost them a seven figure sum.
Ireland’s Turf Club is investigating the gamble and improved performance of the Byrnes trained runners, which were all gambled down from double figure prices.
We will look into it further, but the stewards on the night did conduct two improvement-in-form inquiries and examined videos of those horses' previous runs and were happy with the action they took.
All three runners had shown very little in their previous runs. War Anthem, a maiden was backed down from 16/1 to 6/1 having been beaten 16 lengths, 75 lengths and 64 lengths in his previous runs but bounced back with a comfortable victory in the 2 miles maiden hurdle.
Mr Smith, an expensive well-bred Galileo gelding who cost 280,000 guineas also came in to this race without a win and was backed down from 14/1 to 7/4. He was pushed out for a 4 lengths win and a first victory.
Completing the treble was Top Of The Town who registered a cosy 5 length win the handicap hurdle. From a morning price of 16/1, he was backed all the way down to 5/4 as punters at home got on the gamble to hit the bookies further.
