A group of 22 Chinese nationals were arrested in Phnom Panh, Cambodia after a tip-off led them to an illegal online gambling operation being run from a property.
The Cambodian Interior Ministry Department led by Uk Heisla began to monitor the villa in Sen Sok district and discovered four women at the address had invalid passports or visas.
When police raided the villa they arrested 22 Chinese nationals, aged between 25 and 40 who were using laptops to operate an illegal online gambling business.
We arrested 22 Chinese nationals in a villa where we found they were operating illegal gambling on lotteries, baccarat or roulette online. Football was also among the betting options made available by the group.
All 22 will face deportation after any ensuing prosecutions.
Cambodia is proving to be a popular destination for illegal Asian online operations with its relaxed enforcement of gambling legislation and cheap labour, though the authorities are beginning to crack down on their activities.
In February, 23 Korean nationals were arrested over a similar operation in the same area of Sen Sok while 39 were arrested in June in Chamkar Mon in an operation the targeted China.
