Successful Poker player TJ Shulman, a regular at the Hialeah Park’s poker room in Bansalem, Philadephia sensed something wasn’t right at his local tournament as it got under way.
Several casino staff and players were seen conversing with each other and seemed to be choosing where they wanted to sit at the table. These players were entering the tournament without any paper work or receipts.
With a field of around 1,000 entrants, the tournament should have been worth around $200,000 with all the entry fees but the final listed pay-outs were massively short of that figure.
I told a Hialeah supervisor, you’re missing $48,000 from the prize pool, he says, if you don't like the way we're playing here, go back to the Hard Rock.
Shulman and several other players reported the incident to the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering. An investigation revealed a series of breaches with a lack of documentation and paperwork for the tournaments, CCTV footage was also missing from parts of the casino and staff were seen pocketing cash from the tournament they were fleecing.
Shulman had heard rumours that there was something going on at the casino involving casino staff allowing people they knew to enter the tournaments for free.
They were talking in Spanish, and the guy understood another player saying he was getting 20 percent of the winnings and giving the staff 80 percent.
The poker room manager Nelson Costa resigned from the casino and three of his assistants were fired. The casino faces a six figure fine for the infringement but no criminal prosecutions are to be sought.
