Above: The Tony Cruz trained Blazing Speed is closely matched with Military Attack
The 10 furlong Hong Kong Cup has been dominated by home trained horses winning the last four renewals. Tony Cruz has trained two winners of the Cup and trains this year’s Audemars Piguet QEII Cup winner Blazing Speed who comes in to this year’s race with a head second finish to Military Attack when trying to give him 5lb in the group 2 Longines Jockey Club Cup over course and distance. Blazing Speed meets that opponent on level weights this time around which should give him the edge having finished in front of him on their previous meetings over 10 furlongs at level weights.
Blazing Speed is currently available at 10/1 with many UK bookies but is likely to be much shorter on the PMU as an home trained horse. Last year’s winner Designs On Rome is a big price at 6/1 with the UK bookies but trainer John Moore has made no secret of the fact that he has only been able to get a single run in to him coming in to this year’s race.
The UK bookies have Dermot Weld’s Free Eagle as low as 5/2 but is sure to be a much bigger price on the local PMU while Gailo Chop and Free Port Lux are likely to be massive prices as well. Gailo Chop could be worth a saver at big price as he has already shown a liking for southern hemisphere racing when taking the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington.
Above: 100/1 Shot Dan Excel has a great record over 10 furlongs
The UK bookies have taken a big chance on the John Moore trained Dan Excel who was formerly known as Dunboyne Express when trained by Kevin Prendergast in Ireland and have totally dismissed his chances at 100/1. If you look at his overall record he doesn’t win that often or seem that competitive but if you look at his record over the cup distance of 10 furlongs it’s a different story.
His Last four races over 10 furlongs have seen him win the group one Singapore Airlines International Cup beating Military attack in to second in May this year. He also won the previous year’s race with the same opponent back in third and the two other runs were here at Sha Tin and Kranji finishing second to Military Attack twice when he was at the top of his game and winning nearly everything.
If you discount his three runs this year that were run over an inadequate distances of 7 and 8 furlongs and in handicaps and a group 2 where he was conceding weight then the 100/1 looks an amazing each way price which is available at one quarter the odds with Bet365.
